Some of the most powerful learning moments happen when young people are given the opportunity to explore, ask questions, and see themselves in new possibilities for the future.

This fall, our youth experienced exactly that during a special visit to Oats Overnight, where curiosity, science, and a little bit of mess-making came together in the best way possible.

What started as pouring oats from packets quickly became something much bigger.

During the tour, one of the guides paused to tell the youth, “You guys are scientists! You’re doing science right now.” In that moment, the room shifted. What had felt like simply mixing ingredients suddenly became an exciting introduction to hands-on science and discovery. You could see it click for many of the youth as they began to realize that science is not just something found in textbooks or classrooms, it exists in everyday experiences, creativity, and problem-solving.

Throughout the visit, youth learned about food safety, explored how flavors are developed, and heard directly from the food scientists responsible for creating products enjoyed by customers across the country. Dressed in protective gear and stepping inside the production space, the youth eagerly asked questions, observed the process up close, and immersed themselves fully in the experience.

And of course, there was plenty of excitement during the taste-testing portion of the tour.

From birthday cake-inspired flavors to cereal favorites like Fruit Loops, youth enthusiastically sampled different oat mixes while trying to guess each flavor combination. Laughter, curiosity, and conversation filled the room as young people explored new tastes and shared their favorites with one another.

Experiences like this are about much more than a field trip.

At Friends – Phoenix, we know exposure creates opportunity. Through long-term relationships with professional mentors, youth are introduced to new environments, careers, and possibilities they may not otherwise encounter. Whether it is visiting a workplace, meeting professionals, or simply hearing someone say, “You can do this too,” these moments help expand what young people believe is possible for themselves and their futures.

Sometimes all it takes is one experience, one conversation, or one moment of discovery for a young person to begin seeing themselves differently. We are incredibly grateful to Oats Overnight for opening their doors and creating such a memorable and inspiring experience for our youth.
