Growing in Confidence from the Classroom to the FRIENDraiser
When Joey first met Hobbes*, he was a first grader struggling to stay in class. He’d crawl under tables, make noises, or run out of the room to avoid work. His teachers were overwhelmed and unable to channel his energy, and Hobbes quickly fell behind his peers academically. But Joey, his new Friend, saw something different when he met Hobbes: a fun, sweet, and charismatic boy who just needed someone to believe in him.
At first, even making the initial connection with Hobbes’ mom was a real challenge for Joey. With seven children and her own experiences of trauma, she often avoided school calls, fearing more bad news. Joey earned her trust by showing up consistently, for both her and Hobbes. He became the bridge between home and school, helping organize meetings, and advocating for Hobbes’ needs in the classroom.
As Joey worked to build his relationship with Hobbes and his family, Hobbes’ behavior in school was a persistent challenge. When Joey would take him on outings, Hobbes would behave very differently than in the classroom. Joey began spending more time in the classroom, intentionally listening and observing. Joey began noticing the specific triggers for Hobbes’ behavior, like a teacher raising their voice or a classmate picking on him. Joey started emphasizing building up Hobbes’ self-esteem and confidence, and worked with him on developing a growth mindset to work through both academic and social challenges. He spent hours helping Hobbes find his spark through art, music, and all kinds of adventures. Joey would encourage him often using the same words as they explored new things: “You have skills. You’re talented.” Slowly, Hobbes began to believe it too.
By the third grade, Hobbes transferred to a smaller school with more support. He was still catching up academically, but his growth was undeniable. So much so that before the end of his third grade year, Hobbes proudly earned Student of the Month, a milestone that Joey celebrated as much as he did. And when Friends – Phoenix hosted its annual FRIENDraiser in the spring of 2025, Joey specifically chose Hobbes to greet guests as they entered the event, knowing his unique charisma would shine. Hobbes stood tall, proudly welcoming hundreds of people with his confidence beaming for all to see.
Today, almost a year after that night at the Phoenix Country Club, Hobbes continues to grow. He is learning to handle challenges, advocate for himself, and see a bright future ahead. His younger brother is now in our Friends - Phoenix program, too, walking his own path with a Friend by his side and beginning to set goals and dream dreams for his future. Joey is excited for the future, too, looking forward to supporting Hobbes and all the young boys he mentors. Thanks to the support of our Phoenix community, and the dedication of Friends like Joey, Friends - Phoenix youth will continue to have opportunities to increase their confidence, discover their own unique spark, and build the skills they need to truly thrive. *Youth name changed to protect privacy.
